strawberry field

green county, virginia 1998

Located on a modest ridge in an open field of wild strawberries, this house is part of a three and a half acre parcel in the rolling hills just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The owners sought to build a simple, unique house on an extremely limited budget.

This plan, inspired by local vernacular forms and materials, combined the client’s affinity for the prototypical Southern dogtrot house with an expressed desire for day-lighting, mountain views and privacy. The couple shared a respect for the landscape and were particularly interested in a shelter closely tied to the land. The heavy gauge galvalume sided structure was rapidly assembled using structural insulated panels bearing on glue-laminated beams and columns.
