brookhill ice rink

a collaboration with architects tim mohr + fred wolf

vision

With the loss of a downtown ice rink, the Charlottesville community is in desperate need of a new facility. As part of the new Brookhill town center just north of the city, a new rink is situated at the end of the center along the east edge.

concept

At the core of the project is a multi-use lobby. While the rink entrance faces an adjacent roadway, its orientation and exposure is inspired by the potential of an adjacent future amphitheater and greenspace. A cafe offers prospect above the rink as well as distant landscape views northward across a spacious veranda. A wide ramp connects the lobby with the rink and seating for 700 spectators.

challenges

Ice arenas are complex and a challenge in southern climates. The rink environment is corrosive and requires special consideration of materials and mechanical systems. Like ice houses of the past, the ice level is embedded in the earth to help lower operating expenses.
