zamora, spain 2022

This new span provides visitors an efficient connection from a proposed new car park to the city's historic summit.  In lieu of imposing a new span at the refurbished mills, the route is pulled away from these iconic landmarks to preserve their integrity and historical significance. Taking advantage of an existing north bank overlook and stair, the span is more direct.

From the parking lot on the south bank an at-grade connection is proposed. A new abutment includes ramp and stair connections to river level below. Similar to the recent roundabout to the west, a passage beneath the abutment maintains the continuity of the riverside path.  On the north bank, new accessible ramps and a stair along the existing escarpment behind the overlook are part of the shorter route to the cathedral and castle.

The bridge is formed from a curved Corten steel box beam supported by two arches that meet at a central pier.  Ramp and stair incisions in the span offers a means to a new promenade below.  Following the geologic shear mid-river, this water level east-west connection between the historic mills and the 12th century bridge presents a new avenue for everyone to engage the river.

In its role as a supporting actor, this is an elegant yet simple span maximizing connectivity for citizens and visitors alike, while deferring to its historical context.
