WILDROCK BRIDGES

Whitehall, Virginia 2016

Description

Wildrock is a nature playspace north of Crozet in Albemarle county. Built by volunteers, the founders seek to advance the emerging concept of ecotherapy and instill conservation ethics in future generations.  Two crossings of a meandering discovery trail over an existing stream requires accessible bridges.

Sites

Upper and lower bridge crossings connect a hiking path on the site. In the future, a terraced interactive play space along the stream’s edge will be bound or “bookended” by the two curved metal spans.

Materials

Inspired by abandoned weathered agrarian structures, two steel wide flange sections span 31′ and support curved Corten steel plate and tube guardrail assemblies.  4×6 oak decking bolted to the steel frame will weather in time.
